Gullane Golf Club in East Lothian boasts three superb links courses with dramatic views across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh and Fife.
Gullane No.1 course was opened in 1884 and has a long history of hosting national and international championship golf events, including the 2015 and 2018 AAM Scottish Open. The course is carved into the ancient links turf; pot bunkers, wispy grasses and smooth-running greens offer a unique challenge for the serious golfer. With every hole having its own distinct character, Gullane No. 1 is both memorable and enjoyable, and undoubtedly one of Scotland’s finest links courses.
Opened in 1898, Gullane No.2 was laid out by the legendary Willie Park Jr and has also been used for Open Championship Qualifying as well as the Seniors Open Amateur. Running alongside No.1 for the first seven holes, the course sweeps down to a nature reserve next to Aberlady Bay before turning back towards home and the Visitors’ Clubhouse. In particular, No.2 is famed for the challenge of its short holes embodied by the 215-yard, par three 11th with its wonderful views and testing tee shot. At 6,385 yards, No.2 is shorter than its older sibling but provides an equally stern test.
Gullane No.3 (1910) was also designed by Willie Park Jr. Although the shortest of the three courses, this is no soft option. Despite a lack of yardage, the course still presents the classic Gullane challenge of strategic course management, true running greens and numerous bunkers to be avoided – and all played out in stunning scenery. A deft touch and a cool head is needed to score well on Gullane No.3.
